Lymphoedema Service
Lymphoedema is chronic swelling caused by a buildup of fluid (lymph) and occurs when the lymphatic system is either faulty or damaged. Lymphoedema may arise due to trauma, cancer treatment, infection, venous insufficiency or hereditary. In most cases an arm or leg is affected but lymphoedema can occur anywhere else in the body. There is no known cure for lymphedema, but it can be managed with appropriate care. The aim of management is to reduce and control swelling, improve the range of movement to the affect area and prevent infections.
